Ruben Amorim is perhaps the most Googled name in Liverpool over the past 24 hours as supporters clue themselves up on the Sporting Lisbon boss.
The 39-year-old has been linked with Anfield for a number of weeks but speculation hit new heights on Tuesday when inaccurate reports suggested he had reached a verbal agreement with Liverpool. The Echo understands that no such handshake has taken place and that club officials continue to sound out potential alternatives.
Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi and interim Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann have been linked but Amorim remains the favourite. Amorim is on course to guide Sporting to their second title in four years, having led them to their first crown in 19 years during the 2020/21 season.

He has been hailed for his transfer successes too. Out of Portugal’s ‘big three’, Sporting have the lowest revenue return but are considered to have a greater squad value than Porto and Benfica. Sporting, then, will be no pushovers when it comes to discussing compensation.
Amorim said last month that he “can't make any guarantees” over his future in Portugal amid reports that he has a release clause in his contract. Many reports, including those from 90min, say that the figure stands at £17m.
However, it is thought Sporting may allow Liverpool to grab Amorim for around half of that sum - around £8.6m to be precise. The suggestion is that Sporting have shaken on a gentleman’s agreement that their manager can leave should a top European side come calling.
