Gremio manager Renato Gaucho has ruled out Luis Suarez leaving the club this summer amid interest from Inter Miami.
The Athletic previously reported that despite public courting by the club’s ownership, Suarez would not be joining his close friend Lionel Messi in Major League Soccer.
Gaucho has now confirmed that the Uruguayan striker will be staying at the Brazilian club, labelling Suarez an “important figure.”

He said: “Without any doubt, he’s a very important player for us. He has been since his arrival. He always makes the difference. I have spoken before about the soap opera [behind the scenes], but that soap opera ended yesterday. It’s over.
“That will bring a new sense of calmness to him, to the club and to the fans. He is going to stay with us until December. He’s a very important figure here, on and off the pitch. He gives us reassurance. He’s the fourth highest-scoring player in the world [in activity]. He has helped us a great deal and I hope he can continue that today, against a great Flamengo team.”
Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas commented on the possibility of Suarez joining Miami last week. He said: “I don’t know how Luis Suarez can leave Gremio. But if he does we are free to talk to Luis and bring him to Inter Miami. That possibility would be there.”
Suarez, 36, is currently under contract with Brazilian side Gremio until December of 2024. He played the entirety of his side’s 2-0 defeat to Flamengo last night.
He signed a two-year contract with Gremio after a highly-publicized return to his boyhood club, Club Nacional de Uruguay, in the summer of 2022.
