Erik ten Hag is keen to bolster his midfield before the transfer window closes on September 1.
The Dutchman was hoping to secure Morocco international Amrabat on a permanent basis, though Financial Fair Play rules mean they are now exploring a season-long loan deal.
Amrabat impressed for his nation at the World Cup in Qatar and is understood pushing for a move to Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old is under contract with the Serie A giants until 2024, and has attracted plenty of interest from the likes of Atletico Madrid and United's bitter rivals Liverpool.
Man United have already splashed £60million on Mason Mount, but given the former Chelsea star is out injured, along with Kobbie Mainoo, Ten Hag has been left with no option but to bolster his ranks.
