Manchester United closed in on a repeat of last season’s FA Cup final against rivals Manchester City as they opened up a 3-0 lead in Sunday’s semifinal against Coventry City.
Scott McTominay replaced Willy Kambwala in the only change from United’s 2-2 Premier League draw at Bournemouth last time out and the Scotland international converted Diogo Dalot’s 23rd-minute cross to break the deadlock.
Championship side Coventry retained their threat on the break but were left with a mountain to climb when Harry Maguire powered home Bruno Fernandes’ right-wing corner in first-half stoppage time.
Mark Robins' side were forced to chase the game, which opened up opportunities for United to counter. When a Marcus Rashford raid broke down before the hour, Fernandes picked up the pieces with some smart footwork and fired home with the help of a deflection.
Coventry had faint hope when Ellis Simms clipped home his seventh goal of their FA Cup run inside the final 20 minutes.
