Marseille’s Gennaro Gattuso questions his players’ workrate
Speaking to the press following Olympique Marseille’s last-minute defeat to RC Lens on the weekend, Gennaro Gattuso admitted he was “worried” by his side’s lack of form. Les Phocéens have taken only one point from the nine available.
It wasn’t Jonathan Gradit’s (30) 90th-minute headed goal that concerned the Italian boss, but rather his team’s attitude, stating that “we will need to work, notably on a mental level, because we just lost a game at the 90th minute. We see some players pressing at only 50 or 60%, which is unacceptable. We’re going to work to try and resolve these issues.”. OM had already lost late October’s clash with OGC Nice in a similar fashion, with Evann Guessand’s (22) late winner coming in the 79th minute.
“As a coach, it is my fault if I’m not able to get 100% from the players. We have quality players, and important absentees in the midfield. I fully assume the errors in the choices that I make.” Gattuso continued in a post-match press conference, transcribed by L’Équipe. Important squad players Valentin Rongier (28) and Azzedine Ounahi (23) were two major absences on Marseille’s match sheet, and are ruled out due to a knee and back injury respectively.
No doubt the squad will be working hard during the international break, as they’ll be looking to regain form in their next Ligue 1 fixture away to RC Strasbourg.
