Matteo Moretto Transfer Column: Mason Greenwood, future of Real Madrid forward and Barcelona manager fallout
Matteo Moretto gives Football España exclusive information on the latest deals dominating the papers in Spain, as revealed in Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing.
As far as I know, the option that was considered closest to the Barcelona job in the event of Xavi Hernandez’s departure was Rafael Marquez. It is true that Barcelona President Joan Laporta, who ultimately makes the decisions, is a very good friend of agent Pini Zahavi, and that he put a lot of pressure on Laporta for Hansi Flick to go to Barcelona, but the parties were never that close.
It was proposal that was made to Laporta, but Flick was not a profile that had convinced everyone within Barcelona. Now it remains to be seen what the future of the German coach will be, it is still not clear. Laporta and Zahavi have always had a very good relationship with each other and it has not changed, despite other reports to the contrary.
Regarding Mason Greenwood I can confirm that Manchester United would like to sell him to make some money this summer. Current loan club Getafe, who have a sell-on percentage for 20% of any future deal, are still trying to retain him, but it will not be easy because there is a lot of competition for the 22-year-old.
There are many clubs that are keeping a close eye on his situation, that includes Atletico Madrid, and in Italy too, there are clubs that are very interested. We’ll find out more when Manchester United decide to let him go. From Greenwood’s perspective, at this stage, I don’t think he has expressed a preference for where he would like to play next season.
