It has not been an easy or simple ride for Marc Cucurella at Chelsea.
Signed for £60million in August 2022 from Brighton, big things were expected from the Spain international. And things got off to an almost-perfect start for Cucurella, who was also pursued by Manchester City before eventually moving to Stamford Bridge instead, who really showcased his abilities in the thrilling 2-2 draw with Tottenham in just his second match for the club.
Cucurella was a real live wire for Chelsea on that day. He set up the Blues' opening goal of the game, with Kalidou Koulibaly firing past Hugo Lloris. Not only that, but he was everywhere, in defence and attack for the hosts at the Bridge – in front of Todd Boehly, who was in attendance on the day.
That was, however, one of the only highs for Cucurella in what was a disappointing season for the club and the player. The Spaniard has shown glimpses of what he can offer the Blues but ultimately he is viewed as expendable by the club ahead of a summer transfer window that promises plenty of change at Stamford Bridge once again, football.london understands.
The £60million price Chelsea paid, when Thomas Tuchel was in charge, almost two years ago is an un-gettable fee for the Blues now given the circumstances of his time in west London. In fact, Transfermarkt values the 25-year-old at just £21million right now, which would seen an almost £40million-loss on Cucurella.
Chelsea would of course want more for the Spaniard in the summer. With the Blues looking to recruit in the summer, as Mauricio Pochettino hinted about following the draw with Sheffield United at the weekend, the club will also look to sell to balance the books due to the Premier League's strict Profitability and Sustainability
