Alfie Gilchrist will still be beaming from ear to ear after scoring his first Chelsea goal in Monday evening's 6-0 drubbing of Everton. A boyhood Blues fan and a regular at Stamford Bridge over the years, the moment Gilchrist has dreamt about since he was a youngster finally arrived.
Introduced in the 88th minute of the contest as he replaced Malo Gusto at right-back, two minutes later the 20-year-old had registered his first Chelsea goal with a tidy finish from close range. Sensing an opportunity to get forward with fellow substitute Ben Chilwell embarking on a run down the opposite flank, Jordan Pickford saved the left-back's shot and it fell perfectly into Gilchrist's path.
Seeing the ball bounce his way, the academy graduate kept his composure, got his head over the ball and arrowed a stinging drive into the bottom corner of the net. It sparked wild scenes inside Stamford Bridge, with the goalscorer speeding off to the far corner of the pitch, sliding on his knees and then going over to celebrate with the jubilant fans.
With Chelsea six goals to the good and players sometimes a bit reluctant to celebrate when the scoreline is so convincing, the Blues' outfield players all ran over to congratulate the youngster on his maiden Chelsea goal. Not only could you see just how much it meant to the player, you could also see what it meant to his teammates and just how fond of Gilchrist they are as they shared the moment with him.
You just couldn't wipe the smile off the player's face and he even had a glance up at the big screen inside the stadium to watch his goal back.
