Lionel Messi's heroics for Inter Miami continue to surprise even his teammates, with matchwinner Benjamin Cremaschi admitting after their win over Dallas that no one expected the Argentine to have such a remarkable impact.
Messi's incredible start to life in the United States continued on Sunday night, when he scored twice to inspire Inter Miami to a comeback win over Dallas.
Tata Martino's side reached the last eight of Leagues Cup after coming from 4-2 down with only 10 minutes remaining.
Messi's free-kick was headed into his own net by Dallas defender Marco Farfan before the 36-year-old sent another set piece into the top corner with five minutes to play.
That saw the last-16 clash go to penalties and Messi scored Miami's first spotkick as they ran out 5-3 winners in the shootout.
Cremaschi came on as a second-half substitute and scored Miami's second goal after more magic from Messi and Jordi Alba.
The 18-year-old then netted the winning spotkick and afterwards Cremaschi insisted he never thought Messi would make such a difference so quickly.
'It's amazing what he can do,' the teenager said.
'Nobody expected him to do what he's doing. He's scored twice in almost every game.
'We can't wait for him to keep going like that and help us get as far as we possibly can... I don't get tired of talking about him, I never will!'
Messi has scored seven goals in his first four Inter Miami appearances, helping Martino's side pick up four consecutive victories. And after this comeback, the manager praised his side's mettle.
'It was a match where Dallas played better for almost 60 minutes,' Martino conceded.
'We showed a lot of character to come back twice... I think it bodes well for us because it helps us believe that we're a great team.'
