Mikel Arteta was dealt a major injury scare in the dying embers of Arsenal's 3-1 win over Burnley. With just a few minutes left to play at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Gabriel Martinelli was replaced by Jakub Kiwior.
As the Gunners winger beelined for the substitutes bench, he was spotted clutching his right hamstring. The severity of Martinelli's potential muscle injury remains to be seen, but Arteta will be hoping that his talisman is okay.
The 22-year-old winger is set to join up with the Brazil squad in a couple of days ahead of two crucial World Cup qualifiers against Columbia and and Argentina. The Seleção Canarinha, otherwise known as the Canary Squad in English, currently sit third in the CONMEBOL group with just seven points after four games.
Brazil head into the clash against Columbia on Friday, Novmber 17, following a disappointing defeat to Uruguay – and Martinelli will be determined to guide his nation back to winning ways. Gabriel Jesus has also been named in the Brazil squad for the upcoming international break despite concerns over his fitness.
Ahead of the Burnley clash, Arteta was asked for his thoughts on the Arsenal striker potentially travelling to his homeland for further assessment. The Spaniard replied: «We always try to speak to the national teams and find a common sense.
»The only important thing here is the interest of the player and after, when we have secured that, what is the best interest of the national team and the club."
