Mikel Arteta reveals Arsenal's second leg mindset after 'giving' Bayern two goals

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal must perform better in Munich after 'giving' two goals away to Bayern in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

The Gunners were overwhelming favourites to overcome an inconsistent Bayern at the Emirates Stadium, but failed to overcome the Bundesliga giants despite taking an early lead through Bukayo Saka.

Former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry levelled up proceedings before familiar foe Harry Kane netted from the penalty spot on his return to north London.

Substitute Leandro Trossard's equaliser ensured Arsenal head to Munich next week on level terms, but Arteta admitted his team must learn how ruthless playing the Champions League is ahead of the return leg.

«In the Champions League you cannot give anything to the opponent and we gave them two goals. When you have this situation you are going to be punished. And that is the biggest lesson,» the Spaniard said.

«The margins are very small in this competition and it is really difficult to create quality chances against this level of opposition. But I think the team showed a lot of composure, especially after 2-1 – you can throw your toys away and give your opponents a lot of space but we haven't done that and the substitutes made a huge impact.

»I sense the belief among the ­players that we are going to go to Munich next week and be better."

Arteta would not be drawn, however, on referee Glenn Nyberg's failure to award Arsenal a stoppage time penalty. Bukayo Saka collided with Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer while running at pace, but the England winger was deemed to have initiated the contact by hanging his leg out in front of the goalkeeper's path.

«I haven't seen it,» Arteta remarked «The decision is made, we cannot change that. We
