Morocco, one of the heavily fancied favourites in the Africa Cup of Nations, will commence their campaign on Wednesday evening as they face Tanzania at Stade de San Pedro. They are the overwhelming favourites with the bookies at 1/4 with Betfred while Tanzania are 10/1 outsiders to produce a shock and a draw is 7/2.
Despite a relatively disappointing track record in the continental competition, Morocco raised the bar for African football at the 2022 World Cup. However, their journey was met with reality checks, including a goalless draw against Cape Verde and a 2-1 loss to South Africa in AFCON qualifying matches. A wake-up call came after being held to a 1-1 draw by Ivory Coast.
Head coach Walid Regragui acknowledged that they were not considered favourites to win the AFCON following these results. However, Morocco responded strongly by winning their subsequent matches against Liberia (3-0), Tanzania (2-0), and Sierra Leone (3-1) last week.
With an impressive lineup on paper, Morocco enters the tournament with high expectations. Having only lifted the AFCON trophy once in 1976, they will face immense pressure to make a statement against a favourable opponent in their opening match on Wednesday evening.
