Athlone Town recorded their first away win of the season as a remarkable overhead kick from Carl Mujaguzi was the pivotal factor as Kerry had their seven game unbeaten run in the First Division brought to an end.
Kerry started the brighter and had the ball in the net after two minutes. A ball over the top found Kennedy Amechi, who chipped the ball over Enda Minogue, but the flag was raised.
The hosts dominated the early proceedings, Ryan Kelliher flicked the ball up and turned to strike on the half volley from outside the area, but his shot was dealt with by Minogue.
Daire McCarthy dispossessed Athlone in midfield and played a ball to Sean McGrath in an advanced position after 14 minutes, McGrath turned and struck for goal, his strike from range was tipped over the bar by Minogue with a fabulous acrobatic save.
With 20 minutes elapsed, Kerry were awarded a penalty when Aaron Connolly was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area.
Amechi stepped up and rolled the ball to the bottom left corner, sending Minogue the wrong way.
Despite Kelliher and Amechi having further chances, Athlone dominated the closing proceedings.With Brian Torre orchestrating dangerous crosses on the left wing, the midlanders equalised right on the stroke of half time.
Oisin Duffy provided a pin point cross on the right wing and Aladesanusi was unable to deal with the cross. Fortune favoured Athlone as the ball rebounded off the Kerry centre back’s leg and into the path of Candal to strike home to the bottom left corner from inside the box.
