Trai Hume (right) still has confidence in Northern Ireland's chances
Sunderland hero Trai Hume has insisted Northern Ireland can still make the Euro 2024 Finals in Germany next summer.
Michael O’Neill’s side are fifth in Group H and the pressure is on after three consecutive 1-0 defeats.
The opening victory in San Marino was expected but the narrow defeats to Finland and Kazakhstan at home and Denmark away have left Northern Ireland clinging to hope.
O’Neill’s boys face Slovenia in Ljubljana tomorrow before travelling to Astana to take on Kazakhstan three days later.
It’s a daunting double-header away from home for a squad that has been decimated by injuries.
But former Linfield and Ballymena United defender Hume is adopting a positive mindset, predicting back-to-back victories which will fire his side back into qualifying contention ahead of next month’s home clashes with San Marino and Slovenia.
“The mood is still high, results haven’t gone our way but we still feel we can get something out of this group,” said a defiant Hume.
“It’s very wide open, the teams are evenly matched and if we can get two wins here it will put us right back where we want to be.
“These are two away games but they are both winnable, especially when we look at them in the footage. We can win these two games which sets us up for the next two at home coming up.
“Positive results this week will give us a good chance of getting out of the group. Trying to get to a Euros and World Cup is still my target as well as building up my appearances.”
Hume, who made his debut against Hungary last year, is hoping to win his fifth cap tomorrow.
