Torino will wear a special shirt on Friday in their Serie A match against Bologna to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Superga tragedy, a plane crash in 1949 involving Grande Torino, Italy's top team at the time, in which there were no survivors.
The Turin club, in collaboration with the Joma brand, created a special shirt inspired by the end of the 1940s to pay tribute to one of the great teams in football history, which tragically disappeared on 4th May 1949 while returning from a friendly against Benfica in Lisbon.
"To pay tribute to the 'Invincibles', a symbol of Italy, Torino and Joma are launching a special shirt to commemorate the 75th anniversary of their death," Torino said on Thursday.
"The shirt is inspired by the design of the 1947/48 and 1948/49 seasons of Grande Torino, an icon of Italian football and sport. Made entirely in Italy, it is made of 95 per cent cotton, with a polo style and details reminiscent of the original design," the club explained.
Only 750 units went on sale at €129 each and all were sold out in just hours. Each shirt will be delivered to fans in a special box with the inscription "Superga 75" and the phrase "Only fate could beat them".
