Twitch star Zack "Asmongold," who is known for playing Blizzard's World of Warcraft, recently reacted to the cancellation of BlizzCon 2024. The content creator was pretty let down by the announcement and noted that people did not seem excited enough for the developer's games to generate interest in the convention.
The annual event is known to attract fans from all over the country and beyond. It was not held for two years during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. However, 2024 marks the first time that it has been canceled since it started in 2005.
Asmongold seemed quite pessimistic when he heard the news, even casting doubt on Blizzard's ability to host another convention like this one ever again:
Asmongold is known for being vocal about video game culture, having criticized Blizzard in the past. After reading the official BlizzCon 2024 cancelation announcement on the developer's website, the Twitch star started theorizing about the reasons behind the decision.
Asmongold noted that recent games and updates from the company did not seem to excite fans as much as they did before. The MMO streamer claimed that the World of Warcraft expansion, The War Within, had also failed to generate hype:
Asmongold then criticized Blizzard's other big IP, Overwatch 2, and claimed that canceled features and controversial updates were to blame for its loss of popularity:
He also attacked Blizzard's handling of games like Starcraft 2 and Heroes of the Storm:
The Twitch streamer then brought up last year's convention and how, for the first time in history, BlizzCon tickets were not immediately selling out, which was the norm in the good old days:
Readers should note that Blizzard has confirmed the convention will be back next year.
