Premier League authorities have responded to Nottingham Forest’s claims of questioning the integrity of officials in their match against Everton on Sunday (April 21). Forest on Sunday put up a post on their social media handle having lost 2-0 to Everton, claiming the VAR for the contest was a Luton Town fan. The statement released by Nottingham Forest did not go well with Premier League authorities as they showed their disappointment with how it was handled.
Premier League responds
“The Premier League was extremely disappointed to read the comments made by Nottingham Forest on social media yesterday, following its match against Everton,” Premier League wrote on their X handle.
“We note The FA has confirmed it will be investigating the club’s statement. It is never appropriate to improperly question the integrity of match officials, and the nature of these comments means the Premier League will also be investigating the matter in relation to the League’s Rules,” the statement added.
What is the situation?
On Sunday, Nottingham Forest were denied three penalties according to their referee consultant Mark Clattenburg. After losing the match 2-0 to Everton, Forest sit just one point off Luton Town, who occupy the final relegation spot. According to Forest, VAR official Stuart Attwell is a Luton fan and could have given the wrong instructions to the on-field referee leading to their defeat. The consequences of Sunday’s result could see Forest get relegated at the end of the season.
Forest also claimed that they had alerted the Premier League of Attwell’s favour for Luton and wanted him to not officiate in the match.
