For the first time since 2008/09, Prescot Cables will play in the Pitching In Northern Premier League after securing promotion on Saturday.
The club finished third in the Northern Premier League West, failing to qualify for automatic promotion, and therefore needing to compete in two play-off matches.
Initially, the Cables hosted a dramatic affair against fourth placed, Bootle FC. The match was held at Prescot’s home ground, the Joseph Russel Stadium, with an attendance of 2,035.
Within the fixture, neither team were able to break the deadlock inside of 90 minutes, sending the match to extra time. Then, just 10 minutes in, the Cables finally took the lead courtesy of a goal from Kyle Samber.
The long-awaited strike proved to be the difference and meant that they would face another local side, City of Liverpool FC, in the play-off final. The Purps had overcome second-placed Runcorn Linnets, 2-0 away from home.
Once again, Prescot Cables were able to play on home soil and broke a 21st century attendance record by obtaining a crowd of 2,070.
After a cagey opening half-an-hour, Cables were given a serious advantage in the 37th minute after the Purps’ Max Allen was sent off for a reckless challenge.
From this, the game was turned on its head and just one minute into the added time of the first half, Alex McNally scored, giving Prescot the lead and changing City of Liverpool’s half-time team talk.
With a goal and man advantage, Prescot began to dominate and solidified their promotion chances with a 65th minute goal from John Murphy.
Then, the final whistle blew and with a 2-0 victory, Prescot Cables were finally promoted back up for the first time in over 15 years.
