Paris Saint-Germain have been handed their heaviest Champions League group stage loss of the QSI era by a rampant Newcastle United side. Goals from Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff and Fabian Schär have sent St James’ Park into bedlam. Lucas Hernandez has scored a consolation goal before the hour mark.
Speaking to Canal+, the PSG left-back has lamented his side’s inability to match the Toons’ intensity. “We knew it wouldn’t be an easy game. This is the Champions League. Without pace and physicality, you can end up with such a result.” The 2018 World Cup winner was asked about Luis Enrique’s choice to deprive the midfield of much-needed legs with four attacking players (Kylian Mbappé, Gonçalo Ramos, Randal Kolo Muani and Ousmane Dembélé) starting. “It’s the manager’s choice. We tried to get their defense in trouble, but it did not work.“
Portuguese centre-forward Gonçalo Ramos added that the Magpies “were sharper in the duels” and managed to score their chances. “That’s why they won.” Also speaking to Canal+ was PSG midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery, who was one of the few players to turn up for Les Parisiens. The 17-year-old admitted that he and his teammates “made a lot of errors” at St James’ Park. The PSG youth product said he was not worried for PSG despite tonight’s result. “It’s only the second game. It’s up to us to make things right and win the group.“
