Even before Kylian Mbappe’s short-term future was thrown into flux at Paris Saint-Germain, it was evident that the club had a fair bit of work to do this summer.
PSG managed to retain their Ligue 1 title, their 11th and a national record, but it was achieved off the back of a disappointing six-month period that was beset by off-field issues. On-field performances did not help matters either.

The disappointing nature of some of those displays had much to do with the imbalanced nature of their squad, which struggled to accommodate the brilliance of Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi in Christophe Galtier’s system, as well as just being far too thin. Galtier wished to play with a back three, but in the end did not have enough central defenders to effectively pull this off. When injuries struck in February, just as the pivotal Champions League knockout rounds resumed, PSG paid a big price.
The talk this summer has all been about Mbappe’s future but PSG’s squad has undergone surgery already. Sergio Ramos and Messi have departed, while nine new faces have arrived so far. More are set to join them, including Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele and Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos.
Luis Enrique’s side have just returned from their tour of Japan and South Korea, and the new season is a week away. So, now is a good time to assess how the PSG squad has changed, and what work still needs to be done.
