Bayern Munich's hunt for a new manager has hit a new roadblock as the primary choice, Ralf Rangnick on Thursday (May 2), rejected the chance to join the Bavarian team. The former Manchester United manager said he was focused on seeing out his contract with the Austrian national team and leading them to Euro 2024 this summer.
Bayern had been discussing a deal with Rangnick which would involve him leaving the Austria post early.
«I'm the Austrian team coach with all my heart. This is not a rejection of Bayern, but rather a decision for my team and our common goals,» Rangnick said.
«Our full concentration is on the European Championships. We will do everything we can to get as far as possible!,» he added.
Rangnick rejecting Bayern Munich comes after Xabi Alonso of Bayer Leverkusen and Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann who used to manage Bayern — turned them down.
The Austrian boss confirmed last month that he had been approached by Bayern over their soon-to-be vacant manager role. However, Rangnick added that he was not sure if he would take up the opportunity.
The rejection by Rangnick leaves Bayern scurrying for options as the manager market wears a bleak look. There were rumors about Bayern approaching outgoing Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp but the former Borussia Dortmund manager has made it clear that he will be taking a long sabbatical and does not intend to take up any managerial position.
