Manchester United star Raphael Varane has questioned the new rulings implemented across English football for the 2023/24 season.
Officials will crackdown on time-wasting and dissent across the Premier League and EFL as part of the new refereeing guidelines. There is also set to be a much stricter method utilised of the bench and technical areas.
Injury-time at the end of both halves will also be impacted, similar to the World Cup. For Ipswich Town's 2-1 Championship win over Sunderland on Sunday, 13 minutes of additional time were added at the end of the game.
In Arsenal's Community Shield win over Manchester City, referee Stuart Atwell was at the centre of attention with a number of decisions questioned. In the first-half, Thomas Partey and Julian Alvarez received yellow cards for kicking the ball away.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta was also booked after protesting against Atwell's decision not to book Rodri for a blatant pull of Kai Havertz's shirt. The Man City midfielder avoided a yellow card all afternoon, despite a number of challenges worthy of one.
The weekend's officiating was the first taste of what's to come for the 2023/24 Premier League season. However, Varane has released a statement on his Twitter account to argue against the ruling against dissent.
