Mikel Arteta's frustrated rant about VAR has been backed by an unexpected source after Arsenal's 1-0 Premier League defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday.
«We have to talk about the result because you have to talk about how the hell this goal stand ups and it’s incredible,» the Gunners boss said. Newcastle condemned the north Londoners to their first league defeat of the season thanks to Anthony Gordon's second half goal.
The strike was checked three times by VAR — first to see if the ball had gone out of play, then to determine whether there was a foul on Gabriel and finally to see if Gordon was offside. Unfortunately for Arteta's side, the goal was given.
«I feel embarrassed but I have to be the one now coming here to try to defend the club and please ask for help, because it's an absolute disgrace that this goal is allowed; it’s an absolute disgrace,» Arteta continued
Arsenal were also left frustrated at the decision not to send Bruno Guimaraes off after he appeared to elbow his counterpart in the head on the way through a run. The club later echoed their head coach with a statement hitting out at the PGMOL for «unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors».
Now, after backing up Arsenal's frustrations over the weekend, Richard Keys has slated the PGMOL for its standard of officiating on Tyneside. Writing on his blog, the beIN Sports presenter said: «Here we are again. Every f****ng week. It simply isn’t good enough. It can’t go on. I repeat what I said recently — our current crop of match officials aren’t fit for purpose. They’re hopeless. And they’re ruining the best league in the world.
