Manchester United have spent a lot of money in the transfer market in recent years but have failed to quite translate that into success on the pitch.
Nobody quite sums up their record when it comes to player recruitment in recent years quite like Jadon Sancho.
They chased the winger for two years whilst he was establishing himself as one of the brightest young lights of European football at Borussia Dortmund and eventually signed him for a colossal £73million fee in the summer of 2021.
It would be overstating it to say that Sancho has done “nothing” at Old Trafford, but his return of just 12 goals and six assists in 82 appearances is a paltry return in comparison to what was expected of him – and the kind of output he was registering whilst at Dortmund.
Sancho’s days at United look numbered following a falling out with Erik ten Hag. He’s currently out on loan back at Borussia Dortmund and it appears unlikely that he’ll have a major role to play at his parent club next term – although with Ten Hag’s position in doubt, never say never.
The 24-year-old has slowly but surely got back to form during his loan spell, culminating in an absolutely dazzling man-of-the-match display in Dortmund’s outstanding 1-0 Champions League semi-final victory over PSG. It was a performance that begged the question of whether he’ll become another one that got away for Manchester United.
