Seamus Coleman believes Everton’s performance over the last two seasons “has not been good enough” and that the players must put that right.
The club captain, who will miss the start of the new campaign as he continues his recovery from a knee injury suffered at Leicester City in May, has been impressed by the attitude within the current squad - one that is giving him confidence the club can avoid another struggle against relegation.
He said: “We have got a group of players who are fiercely determined to not be in the position that we have been in for the past two years. It hasn’t been good enough for Everton and we are the ones who can put things right.”
“I have every confidence in the squad and I am really looking forward to the start of the season.”

Coleman went on to add his belief that, in Ashley Young and Arnaut Danjuma, the club has signed “the right characters” and they have settled in well since their arrivals were confirmed. Of his battle to come back from the knee injury he suffered in the first half of the crucial draw at the King Power Stadium, Coleman said he was working hard towards his return but would not put a timeline on his recovery.
The 34-year-old will begin his 15th season at the club when the campaign gets underway against Fulham on Saturday after he signed a new one year deal over the summer.
