Everton’s players were getting plenty of instructions from the touchline at Stade Nyonnais but they weren’t just coming from the usual sources.
Sean Dyche is one of the most proactive managers in the business when it comes to getting his point across to his team on the pitch, so much so that he often shouts himself hoarse to give him his distinct gravelly voice. However, the Stade de Colovray had its own notable spectator who seemed to spend considerable periods attempting to 'coach the coach'.
Having honed his craft as a player operating as a centre-half in the lower divisions of English football, the Blues boss is no shrinking violet himself, of course. Last season when speaking about dealing with scrutiny, he recalled a chastening incident while turning out for Bristol City when he claimed he was booed off with 15,000 people saying “we want Dyche out” while also outlining how he personally deals with individuals who confront him to this day about the football decisions he makes.
But embarking on his first pre-season friendly in charge of Everton, the 52-year-old was given something of a baptism of fire when it came to comments from the crowd. Unless he is somehow able to zone out such background noise, he must have been able to hear every word because this correspondent could from his vantage point in the press box at the top of the stand while a group of non-playing squad members such as Jordan Pickford, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Amadou Onana, Dele Alli, Andre Gomes and new signing Ashley Young were close by and will have also been in earshot of the verbal volleys being despatched with regularity.
