Serie A could land SIX teams in UCL next season after Europa League triumph

Italy could find themselves with six teams in next season's Champions League after Atalanta claimed Europa League success.

The winner of the competition guarantees themselves a spot in the following season's Champions League and the Serie A outfit claimed a historic first title as they ended Bayer Leverkusen's unbeaten season with a 3-0 victory in Dublin.

Ademola Lookman scored a hat-trick for Atalanta, who sit fifth in the league currently. Serie A though, as part of the newly expanded Champions League from next year, have already guaranteed themselves five spots in the competition, as have the Bundesliga.

It means that Atalanta, with two games still to go in Serie A, were already set to qualify for the Champions League. As a result, the fifth Champions League spot could now go down to sixth, which would mean Roma playing in next year's tournament.

Inter Milan have claimed the Italian title and the rest of the top four is made up of AC Milan, surprise package Bologna and Juventus. There are still several variables that could cost Italy their sixth team, as it requires Atalanta to finish fifth - and only - fifth.

They have a game in hand on Juventus in fourth, whom they trail by just two points. For Italy to get a sixth Italian side in the Champions League it would also require them to lose in the Coppa Italia final, where they face Fiorentina, with the winner also landing a route into Europe.

Italy have not had a Champions League winner since 2010 when Inter Milan claimed the treble under the guidance of Jose Mourinho. In the 14 years since they've only had the one finalist, which was Inter last year before Manchester City beat them.
