Simon Jordan has given the most brutal of verdicts on Kai Havertz, and Graeme Souness wasn’t far behind.
Havertz had an evening to forget in the FA Cup against Liverpool, failing to find the net in the 2-0 defeat despite plenty of chances.
The 24-year-old’s five shots were the most from a Gunner in the competition without scoring since 2014, and one header in particular was glaringly worrying.
Havertz now has five goals and an assist in 29 games this season, having been signed in the summer from Chelsea for £65million.
Switching roles between midfield and attack, the German was expected to be relied upon for a better goal contribution, and former Crystal Palace owner Jordan has been baffled by the results.
“Havertz should be on that TV show Pointless,” the talkSPORT host said. “I don’t understand, that must be a tax write off for some reason or another.
“It’s all well and good saying they need a striker, but we said that last season, we said that one of the key components that was missing when Arsenal bottled it last year was someone that can change the direction of travel in difficult games and they didn’t have it.
“[Gabriel] Martinelli wasn’t it, [Gabriel] Jesus isn’t it, and I’m sure Havertz isn’t it, but they went and spent £65million of the owner’s money on buying a player that Chelsea must have laughed to their back teeth off at getting that money back.”
Havertz had a similarly difficult time at Chelsea, but is fondly remembered by Blues fans for his 2021 Champions League final matchwinner.
Before that, he was one of the Bundesliga’s best players at Bayer Leverkusen, registering plenty of goals as a second striker in a team that was based around him.
