Spain's women's football team are now refusing to play again until the president of the Spanish football federation Luis Rubiales resigns following the kissing scandal. Spain's team beat England's Lionesses at the FIFA World Cup final in Australia last Sunday but Luis Rubiales has received widespread condemnation after kissing midfielder Jenni Hermoso on the lips without consent during the presentation.
Now the entirety of the Spanish Women's World Cup football team and dozens of other players said on Friday they would no longer represent their country until Luis Rubiales is removed as the president and head of the national football federation. After the victory in which Spain scored a 1-0 win over England, Rubiales grabbed player Hermoso and kissed her on the lips during the awards ceremony.
Player Jenni denied the kiss was "consensual" in a letter signed by 56 female Spanish football players on Friday. Rubiales was expected to step down but instead claimed he was the victim of "social murder" and "false feminism" in a shocking rant.
Jenni insisted "in no moment" did she consent to a kiss from the country's football federation president Rubiales - as the players unite to boycott over the scandal. In a a statement released on Friday, Jenni reiterated: "I want to clarify, that at no time did I consent to the kiss.
"I don’t tolerate that my word is questioned, much less that words are invented that I haven't said." 56 players including Hermoso and her World Cup-winning teammates signed the joint statement demanding Rubiales be sacked, insisting they will not play unless he is removed from his position.
