Some superb turnouts supporting Newton-le-Willows Angling Association’s match calendar, have recently seen close results as the club hosted its regular opens. In last Sunday’s match on the Upper Pound of the Newton Canal, sponsored by Harry’s T&B, Haydock’s Andy Smith (Newton T&B) took the top honours as he put 6.9.0 of roach together.
Ian Alexander(JB Floats) took 6lb for second with Warrington’s Mike Dench third with a close 5.11.0. In Thursday’s popular disabled and over-60s match held on White Moor Dam’s Oak pool, Eddie Marcroft (Newton T&B) took top honours.
Another close one saw some excellent weights of silvers as Marcroft edged it with 21.9.0. Colin Wood (Woods Floats) took second with 20.12.0. On Beech Pool John Aswin (Warrington) took bream, skimmers and roach for a winning weight of 17.5.0.
Billy Holden (Golbourne) took carp and silvers for second place. Warrington’s Chris Grehan with 13 8.0 rounded off the top three in the frame.
It's all about confidence...
Staying on the East Lancashire Road, looking onto Carr Mill Dam on Sunday, it’s looking very much like the grand old lady is finally waking up given its recent poor form particularly when looking at the tough silver fishing over this last few months of winter. It has been seen as extremely difficult, even by the best and most experienced match anglers, with some extremely low weights being recorded.
However, with the spring now upon us now, many anglers, both out for a pleasure session, or those competing on the match circuit, recordings of some good weights being caught are being noted. St Helens rod Rob Pennington took the top weight on the day as he put together a winning 16.8.0.
