Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to add further quality to their ranks before the end of the summer transfer window - insisting the Reds can be Manchester City's nearest challengers this campaign.
Carragher was speaking after Sunday's last-gasp victory over Newcastle United at St James' Park, where Darwin Nunez marked his 13-minute cameo with two well-taken goals against the Magpies.
But for most of the game on Tyneside, which Liverpool played with ten men after Virgil van Dijk was sent off in the first half, the Reds were second best as Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold, in particular, struggled to deal with Anthony Gordon's electrifying pace down the left.
Had it not been for the heroics of Alisson Becker between the posts, who tallied a career-high numbers of saves in the Premier League, then Liverpool's chances of completing an impressive turnaround would have been all but over before half-time.

And speaking on Sky Sports after the victory, Carragher urged Liverpool to recruit at least two more players before next Friday's transfer deadline if they are to build on their impressive start to the season.
"Listen, Liverpool have been Manchester City's biggest rivals for the last four or five years, Arsenal came to the fore last season. But why can't Liverpool be that team again this season," said Carragher.
"That squad right now that Liverpool have I don't think is good enough to challenge Manchester City, but they have got to go for it this week in terms of bringing maybe another defender in, for me, and a midfield player. That has to happen because
