Mikel Arteta does not know his best Arsenal XI! A phrase you have perhaps seen from specific pundits, perhaps fellow supporters and across social media.
It is, for me, something which I once believed to be not only true but perhaps an issue as the Spaniard looked to build his project at Arsenal and struggled in his opening seasons to find the desired level he wanted whille making drastic changes to his squad. Fast-forward to the 6-0 win over RC Lens in which Arteta again used an eleven he has never used before and it has become apparent that the best XI does not exist and that is absolutely fine.
There is something of a need for there to always be a definitive answer to every question and a consistency to how things are done. However, perhaps this is the wrong way to look at the solution to a problem like how Arsenal become champions and win elite-level tournaments while competing for them season after season.
If Arteta had his best team for the entire season I am certain that it would win the league and potentially more. But as we have discovered, that simply isn’t possible.
