Cape Town Spurs suffered their third successive defeat in the DStv Premiership on Saturday afternoon, following their 3-1 loss to Polokwane City at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
A brace by Oswin Appollis, including a solitary strike by Douglas Mapfumo, was enough for Rise and Shine to record back-to-back wins in the DStv Premiership.
In contrast to how Spurs started their last two games, the Urban Warriors looked lively in the opening exchanges of the encounter. After 10 minutes played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, the Western Cape side carved out a couple of goal scoring opportunities, much to the relief of the Rise and Shine defence.
However, it was Polokwane City who eventually took the lead, as Oswin Appollis gave his team the lead in the 14th minute. After a clever passing move on the edge of the Urban Warriors box, the former Ajax Cape Town youth product’s right-footed curler rifled into the back of the net.
As the 20th minute approached, Polokwane City played with confidence and pressed for the second goal of the match. Spurs however, stuck to their principles and attempted to get into the game via patient build-up play.
After 30 minutes on the clock, Spurs continued to look tidy in possession but struggled to create any notable goal scoring opportunities. For the time being, Rise and Shine looked comfortable in surrendering the ball to their counterparts.
Nonetheless, the referee called time on the first 45 with Polokwane City keeping their slender 1-0 lead intact.
As the second-half commenced, Polokwane City applied pressure early on and looked to increase their lead from the kick-off. As a result, Rise and Shine played much of their football inside the Urban Warriors half.
