Virgil van Dijk hit with FA charge after Liverpool red card at Newcastle
Virgil van Dijk could see his one-match ban upgraded to two games after being charged by the Football Association for acting in an "improper manner" after receiving a red card against Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.
The Liverpool defender was dismissed by referee John Brooks during the first half for a foul on Alexander Isak on the edge of the area, deemed to be denying a goalscoring opportunity, and was left in disbelief after seeing Brooks brandish him a red card.
Van Dijk could be seen pointing in the face of the match official on the pitch after this call was made and later confronted fourth official Stuart Attwell before making his way down the tunnel after seemingly being instructed by Jurgen Klopp to walk away from the situation.
Liverpool's recently-appointed captain was due to be banned for only one game as a result of his sending off, though is now facing the unwelcome prospect of a two-game ban after being charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1. If this proves to be the case, the 32-year-old will be forced to sit out Sunday's clash with Aston Villa and the trip to Wolves directly after the international break on September 16.
