Wayne Rooney fears for Everton should they are handed a second points deduction this season given their recent relegation battles.

The Blues will soon find whether they will be handed a second points sanction after being charged in January with allegedly breaking Premier League spending limits during the previous three-year cycle. Relegation rivals Nottingham Forest have also had the same allegations levelled at them.

In February, Everton's 10-point penalty for prior finance breaches was reduced to six upon appeal, boosting their survival hopes. However, the club remain locked in a relegation battle and another sanction could suck them further into trouble.

Former striker Rooney is concerned about what another deduction would entail for Everton, who are due to move into the new stadium next year. Speaking about the situation to TNT Sports, he said: “Hopefully they don’t get more points deducted, I think everyone is worried in case they do.

“In the last few seasons, it’s been very difficult because they’ve been fighting in relegation battles and just managing to survive and the fans haven’t been happy with the board. It’s been broken to be honest, and Everton is a massive club and you hope they can get back close to where they used to be.”
