WAYNE ROONEY is closing in on a return to management with Plymouth Argyle, according to reports.
The former England star was last in the dugout at Birmingham before he was sacked in January.
Rooney had a horror time at St Andrew's, having won just two of his 15 games in charge.
But Rooney is now set for a comeback amid talks with Plymouth, who narrowly avoided relegation from the Championship on a thrilling last day of the season.
The club are on the lookout for a new boss after the sacking of Ian Foster.
Plymouth chief Neil Dewsnip is driving the interest in Rooney, according to The Telegraph.
The Manchester United legend was a youngster breaking through at Everton while Dewsnip was an academy coach Goodison Park.
They have reportedly kept in contact since.
Rooney, who has also previously managed Derby and DC United, is set for a busy summer as he has agreed to join the BBC for their coverage of Euro 2024.
But despite his venture into punditry, the 38-year-old has made it clear he would like to get back into the dugout.
Rooney said in February: "I definitely want to get back into management.
"It was a setback what happened at Birmingham but I’m a fighter and I want to get back into it.
“You know as a manager being sacked is part of the job and you will have setbacks. It’s about how you bounce back.
"I’ve had some good time to reflect and will make sure I get it right next time."
Plymouth have also been linked with ex-Hull boss Liam Rosenoir, who supposedly turned down the move to Home Park.
And former Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom.
