Minnesota FC striker Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored seven goals in the competition but his club were eliminated by Nashville SC.
With his goal in Friday’s 4-0 quarterfinal win over Charlotte FC, Lionel Messi made it eight goals in just five games played with his new club Inter Miami.
Minnesota FC striker Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored seven goals in the competition but his club were eliminated by Nashville SC meaning the South African forward would be unable to catch Messi at the top of the Leagues Cup goalscoring charts.
Another player trailing Messi is Denis Bouanga (6 goals), who scored a goal in the quarterfinals, but LAFC were defeated by Liga MX side Monterrey.
Germán Berterame and Brandon Vázquez are next on the list of top scorers, with five each, but the former said goodbye to the competition after suffering a broken foot in the game between Rayados and Portland Timbers. Vázquez, who plays for the USMNT, failed to advance in the round of 32 against Nashville.
The players who remain in the tournament and are closest to Messi among the top scorers are his team-mate Robert Taylor (4) and midfielder Dániel Gazdag (4), the Philadelphia Union player.
