In a groundbreaking move for the Premier League, referee Jarred Gillett will don a 'RefCam' during the Crystal Palace vs Manchester United match at Selhurst Park on Monday night.

The league has confirmed that this initiative is part of a unique short programme aimed at highlighting the role of match officials. Although Gillett's camera footage won't be shown live, fans will get to view it subsequently.

This innovative footage is being produced by Premier League Productionsto provide a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by referees in the top tier of English football.

According to the Premier League's statement, «the technology being used comprises a head-mounted device which is integrated into the usual communications system» that match officials utilise. The filming has received the green light from all parties involved, including United, Palace, The International Football Association Board [IFAB], Professional Game Match Officials Limited [PGMOL], and the Premier League itself.

Both Crystal Palace and Manchester United have been acknowledged by the Premier League for their cooperation with this initiative, reports the Manchester Evening News.

So far this season, Gillett has officiated 19 Premier League games, issuing 84 yellow cards and two reds. Of those matches, three have featured Manchester United, including their thrilling 4-3 loss to Chelsea last month.
