Why Pape Matar Sarr does not count as Tottenham homegrown after William Saliba Arsenal loophole
Premier League clubs have the same issue at the start of every season — naming a 25-man squad that conforms with league rules. Tottenham are no different when it comes to naming their squad once the summer transfer window closes.
Premier League rules state that clubs must name a maximum of 25 players in their squad. Of those 25 players, at least eight must be homegrown players. If a club does not have eight homegrown players to name, the size of the squad decreases accordingly.
So if there are only seven homegrown players that can be named, a club would name only a 24-man squad and so on and so forth. But what is a homegrown player?
The rules state: «A 'Home-Grown Player' means a player who, irrespective of nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons, or 36 months, before his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).»
Spurs have lost a couple of those who used to be on the list in the past season, with Harry Kane and Harry Winks both moving on for pastures new. In their most recent squad named in February, Spurs were able to name eight homegrown players — Fraser Forster, Brandon Austin, Alfie Whiteman, Ryan Sessegnon, Ben Davies, Oliver Skipp, James Maddison and Brennan Johnson.
However, clubs are able to name as many U21 players as they like, who can be used at any point in the season, not having to be named amongst a 25-man squad list. Radu Dragusin and Pape Matar Sarr were on that list this season, but will move into the main squad for next season as they turn 22.
