His compatriot Martin Odegaard , is in the same boat, with the Arsenal and Norway captain set for extended rest while a host of his clubmates battle away next June and July.
Neighbours Sweden also came up short, finishing third behind Belgium and Austria in their group, and that will give seven Premier League players a break.
That group includes the Newcastle striker Alexander Isak , Tottenham winger Dejan Kulusevski , Manchester United centre half Victor Lindelof , who captains the national team, and Nottingham Forest forward Anthony Elanga .
Ireland’s dismal campaign, in which they lost six of eight games and only defeated Gibraltar, means Brighton ’s teenage star Evan Ferguson will also have to wait for a major tournament appearance, in additon to other Premier League regulars such as Brentford's Nathan Collins.
