A former Arsenal star has shot down Martin Keown’s claims that he was better than legendary former captain Tony Adams.
The ex-Gunners defender came out with the bold claim on talkSPORT, admitting he ‘genuinely thought’ he was a better defender and overall player than his old teammate and skipper.
It came after Simon Jordan’s interview with Robbie Fowler, who insisted he was better striker than Liverpool teammate Michael Owen ‘in every element’ other than pace.
Some may argue that’s a bold shout, too, and Keown went on to explain why that mentality is important for top players… while making a bold claim of his own.
“You have to have that belief in yourself and you’ve got to get your ‘players’ head’ on,” he told White and Jordan.
“If anyone asks me about Tony Adams, I always think I’m a better player than Tony Adams. People will say that’s ridiculous, but no, no, no, I genuinely thought I was a better defender.
“I’d say that amongst friends… well, now I’m saying it on the radio!”
Keown is an Arsenal legend in his own right, making 435 appearances in 11 seasons as a Gunner and winning seven major trophies — including the club’s famous Invincibles Premier League win.
But Adams is ‘Mr Arsenal’ — a man who spent his entire 19-year career with the north London side, lifting four league titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups and leaving behind a legacy as one of the club’s all-time greatest and most beloved players.
