Former Premier League defender Gary Neville has slammed Arsenal and Liverpool for setting the precedent of writing to the PGMOL following reports that Nottingham Forest had followed suit.
Forest have reportedly written to Howard Webb for clarity over Ivan Toney's free-kick goal for Brentford on Saturday. The striker's first goal on his return to action was allowed to stand despite being spotted moving the ball and vanishing spray.
Toney, who has been linked with a move to Arsenal, curled the ball around the Forest wall to make it 1-1 before Brentford ran out 3-2 winners. After the game, Nuno Espirito Santo vented his frustration with the goal, claiming that VAR should have checked it.
He said: “It was ball displacement. The law is clear, every goal must be checked and every situation that leads to a goal must be checked. I don’t know whether they checked, but it is ball displacement.
“I was also surprised the players didn’t complain about it. I think we have to be a little bit more mature in that situation, because it changes the position of the wall and then it is a soft ball. Everyone in the stands thinks it is a mistake of the wall with its position, but it was a clear ball displacement — not only inches, it is a yard almost.”
On Sunday, it has been widely reported that Forest have written to the PGMOL to ask for clarity on whether Toney broke the rules and whether VAR should have intervened.
