Andy Carroll on his final two years at Newcastle United: “Nothing happened as I hoped it would”
Newcastle United youth product Andy Carroll (34) has given a wide-ranging interview to L’Équipe. The England international has opened up on the Magpies’ Champions League showdown against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday at St James’ Park.
The 34-year-old striker, who joined Ligue 2 side Amiens SC this summer, admitted to the outlet that he is watching as many Newcastle games as he can, and he will make no exception for Wednesday’s UCL clash. When asked if Eddie Howe’s Magpies had a chance against Luis Enrique’s PSG, Carroll responded in the affirmative. “They were a bit tense for their return in the competition at Milan, but they will let loose at St James’ Park, where the atmosphere will be completely crazy.“
Carroll adds that he is still in touch with Newcastle players and staff members. “I will send them messages of encouragement before the game.” After his breakout stint at Newcastle United, Carroll returned to Tyneside in 2019 in the hope to end his career with the Magpies. “But nothing happened as I hoped it would”, lamented Carroll.“The team wasn’t playing well, I wasn’t featuring much and, because of the pandemic, we played games in an empty St James’ Park, which was sad because the club draws all its strength from the fans.”
Carroll also mentioned how puzzled the players were by the decisions taken by then Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce. “Players like Jacob Murphy, Sean Longstaff, Fabian Schär or Elliot Anderson were benched, even though they proved their worth. They are playing in the Champions League now.”
