Ange Postecoglou admits he is hopeful of getting new Tottenham signings in through the door earlier in the January transfer window but understands there are plenty of moving parts to deals.
The Spurs boss learned this week that he will be without vice-captain Cristian Romero for four to five weeks with a hamstring strain. The Argentine's absence comes on top of the injuries to Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Manor Solomon, Ryan Sessegnon and Ivan Perisic, while Son Heung-min, Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr are set to depart early next month for the Asian Cup and Africa Cup of Nations respectively.
Postecoglou had wanted to sign another senior centre-back in the summer window on top of Van de Ven and teenager Ashley Phillips but Spurs were unable to get another player through the door and then the Australian agreed to the sale of Davinson Sanchez to Galatasaray after the English window had closed.
Now those Romero and Van de Ven injuries mean Spurs could end up lining up with four full-backs in defence again as they travel to Brighton on Thursday night with Ben Davies and Emerson Royal potentially filling in.
Postecoglou admits that transfer business early in the January transfer window would be the ideal solution for a number of reasons.
«I dunno [if we can] because there's just so many moving parts. Obviously if we can do business early it's great for us, not just because of losing Romero but there's a whole month there — why waste it?» said the Tottenham head coach. «If you can bring them in early, even if they don't play you can bed them into training and our style of football because it's not like we're going to sign somebody and they'll hit the ground running. Maybe they could.
