With a huge hint of spring in the air this week, particularly evidenced by many species of birds that are beginning to pair up and nest now, venues everywhere have also seen lots of anglers enjoying some great sport as the days are becoming increasingly longer at last. First though, as many of my fellow anglers will well be aware of, I’m always one for noticing the many bird species that give us anglers a great deal of joy when we’re out fishing.
For me, enjoying the nature and environment surrounding us when fishing is always something I look forward to on my trips out. The canal lengths local to me are a place where there’s always a huge opportunity to witness many species of birds occupying the hedgerows alongside me. Everywhere when out fishing, there’s always something to see and enjoy.

Now it’s a thought that immediately came to mind on hearing of a pair of kingfishers enjoying the sun and preening before an angling friend of mine who was fishing this weekend. On what turned out to be successful day out on the bank with roach and perch plentiful within a superb catch, a view of this magical little bird made the trip out even more special for my friend who was just as delighted to witness the wildlife around him.
On the bank not far away catching up with the news on Downholland’s Mescar Fisheries, after last week’s explosive report that saw complex owner Andy Molyneux lead some terrific weights with a winning 98.8.0 weight on the Mistral Lake, this weekend’s match again saw this prolific venue repeat turning up some great weights.
