Arsenal have watched plenty of young stars come through the academy who many believed would make the breakthrough to the senior side. Yet, due to the combination of transfers and in-house squad improvements, often the pathway doesn’t materialise and permanent exits are found.
This was certainly the case for Marcelo Flores, who impressed plenty of the Arsenal supporters during his time in the academy. He gained notoriety for getting a senior cap for Mexico before getting close to a senior appearance for Arsenal but has now left in a reported £2million deal, claims the Evening Standard, to Tigres in his country of origin.
Not only Nwaneri, but a number of teenagers are making their marks at incredibly young ages which could be set to cost other kids their chances in north London. Reuell Walters, Lino Sousa, Amario Cozier-Duberry and Myles Lewis-Skelly are all names fans should get used to knowing.
Flores was just the latest in a long line of ‘would-be’ potential starlets who have been pushed out by these two factors. Names like Joel Ideho, Daniel Ballard, Zech Medley, Matt Smith and Jeff Reine-Adelaide might come to mind among others.
But more could yet be at risk after being raved about for so long. Charlie Patino is likely to be the most notable.
