Arsenal get clear Xavi Simons transfer timeline after missing out on bargain £5.1m clause

Arsenal continue to be linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain talent Xavi Simons.

Simons is currently on loan at RB Leipzig and is impressing with the Bundesliga club. The 20-year-old has scored seven goals with nine assists in his 27 appearances for Leipzig this season, and that form has seen him linked with a move in the summer.

PSG signed Simons from PSV Eindhoven last summer, just a year after he initially left the Ligue 1 club. Simons was then loaned out to Leipzig for the current campaign and is now being linked with a move to the Premier League.

According to Fabrizio Romano for Caught Offside, Arsenal initially showed an interest in Simons last summer. It has been stated that while there is «nothing new» in terms of an update on the apparent interest, the Gunners have a decision to make at the end of the season on whether or not to pursue a move for Simons when the transfer window reopens.

The report adds that PSG are pleased with how Simons' loan with Leipzig has gone in the first half of the season. It has been claimed that there is no chance of the attacking midfielder leaving the Bundesliga club during the January transfer window.

Arsenal were one of many clubs offered the chance to sign Simons last summer but PSG struck gold by activating their €6million (£5.1m) buyback clause, which other interested sides were forced to miss out on. Barcelona have also been linked recently.

This month has seen Arsenal linked with the possibility of signing a striker. Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah and Kai Havertz are the current centre-forward options in Mikel Arteta's squad at the Emirates Stadium.
