Arsène Wenger believes that Arsenal were right to splash the cash for the signing of West Ham midfielder Declan Rice (24). The Gunners made the England international the most expensive British player ever with the Hammers letting go of their prized asset in exchange of a £105m transfer fee. Rice has signed a five-year contract with the Gunners. Speaking to Eurosport from this Sunday’s Tour de France stage in the Alps, Wenger has lauded the arrival of the 43-times England international who, like Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz, have taken the leap to North London.
“I think it is a good investment,” assessed Wenger. “Overall, personally I think they have made good buys as they are players who are now mature, 23,24, and still young so can stay together for a few years.” The 73-year-old FIFA’s Chief of Global Football revealed he would have sanctioned similar big-money moves during his time at the club, but that he did not have such funds at his disposal. “I had to cope with no money at all, so you have to find a different way,” underlined Wenger. “Arsenal is now in a good financial situation and bought what they think will win the championship.”
The Gunners will start their Premier League campaign at home against Nottingham Forest on Saturday 12th August.
