The idea of a multi-club model has been something so far relatively out of touch at Arsenal. Although there has been a link with fellow Stan Kroenke-owned Colorado Rapids that recently saw Auston Trusty bought and sold for a small profit, and Jack Wilshere considered for a head coaching role, beyond that there has been very little mentioned.
It is a topic which I have been vocal on before and the need for the Gunners to avoid being left behind. It is a phenomenon that is being effectively encouraged with clubs continually growing their networks with clubs in other continents.
I see the models as a positive for all the clubs involved with the potential drawbacks wholly outweighed by the benefits. The negative for Arsenal however is that they do indeed, at least for the moment, look to be somewhat left behind by the movements of other clubs.
Aston Villa have recently announced a collaborative partnership with Japanese club Vissel Kobe. Arsenal fans might recognise the club from Thomas Vermaelen’s presence with the Asian club.
Villa announced in a statement on their website: «The J1 League side, who currently sit top of the division, join the growing V Sports global network of clubs alongside ZED FC and Vitória Sport Clube from Egypt and Portugal respectively.
»As part of this exciting step forward for both clubs, Villa and Vissel Kobe will work to create a bilateral development framework for players and staff which will enhance youth development, alongside the cooperative sharing of ideas, techniques and best practice. The partnership will look to further open up pathways for talented Japanese players to play in Europe and, ultimately, at Aston Villa."
