Bayern Munich assistant coach Anthony Barry could be in line for a return to the Ireland set-up as the 37-year-old is in the running to replace Stephen Kenny as senior manager.
Barry previously spent 12 months in Kenny’s backroom team, a role he combined while he was a coach at Chelsea, before departing in February 2022 to link up with the Belgian national team. Barry’s spell with Kenny coincided with the Boys in Green finishing 2021 unbeaten in six games, including a 0-0 draw against Portugal.
The Liverpool native followed Roberto Martinez to the Portugal set-up last March before also becoming assistant coach at Bayern the following month when Thomas Tuchel arrived at the Bundesliga giants. He currently holds both roles with Portugal, who will compete in next summer’s European Championships after winning all 10 of their qualifiers.
But the former midfielder could be about to return to Abbotstown for his first job as a manager, with the Telegraph reporting today that Barry is a leading candidate for the Irish hot seat following the departure of Kenny last month after three-and-a-half years in charge.
